I’m a native angeleno and Christmas is a little bit up in the air out here. We don’t have many traditions, most of the town are transplants, and frankly Christmas is associated with snow. Today, I found out that Irving Berlin’s “I’m dreaming of a white christmas” was written because he was living in Beverly Hills at the time and missed the snow.
Here is the forgotten first verse of the song:
The sun is shining, the grass is green
The orange and palm trees sway
There’s never been such a day
In Beverly Hills, L.A.
But it’s December the 24th
And I’m longing to be up North…
I’m dreaming of a white christmas,
just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
to hear sleigh bells in the snow
I honestly can’t find a version that includes this intro. I say we bring it back as the Los Angeles Christmas Anthem?
